Our research involves hybrid and electric propulsion systems, large energy storage devices, power converters, autonomy, digital twins, and integration with mission systems to achieve fast and reliable power system response.  

About the
Role

This role requires an understanding and passion for utilizing machine learning technologies for the analysis and control of multi-domain (electrical, mechanical, thermal, and communications) digital twin systems. The successful candidate can identify appropriate machine learning strategies for a given application and design, implement, train, and test machine learning models to achieve the objectives of the application. The primary areas of focus will be the optimal control of advanced shipboard power systems in both off-line and real-time environments. Both data-driven and physics-informed approaches may be utilized based on the needs of the specific application.  

The Machine Learning Engineer will work both individually and in concert with modeling and simulation engineers, human-machine interface developers, various subject-matter experts, and program management to design and implement suitable machine learning models, and to assist in the development of efficient, robust, and reliable intelligent system applications for several customers across government and industry.   

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge by remaining well-informed of the latest machine learning software libraries and hardware applications being developed and used across industry and academia. The candidate must be organized and detail oriented.  This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial. 

Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.  

 

Primary Responsibilities  

  • Design and develop machine learning modeling strategies for various applications, using suitable software and hardware platforms and interfaces. 

  • Create and utilize large training and validation datasets obtained via computer simulations and data historians for supervised learning. 

  • Integrate machine learning models into Digital Twin simulations that include multiple interconnected computer models of multi-domain systems, including real-time simulations.  

  • Collaborate with modeling and simulation engineers to develop interfaces and requirements for physics-based and behavioral computer models used in Digital Twin applications. 

  • Engage with partners and customers to understand customer or user needs and elicit project requirements. 

  • Document, present, and demonstrate work to internal and external project stakeholders.  

  • Work collaboratively with software engineering and business development team members to develop new products and services using modeling and simulation tools and insights derived from their application. 

Core Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other related technical discipline.  

  • 3-5 years of relevant industry experience with demonstrable expertise in AI/ML applications. 

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages suitable for AI and machine learning development (Python, C++, Java, or R). 

  • Experience using common AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, SciKit, Flux, or similar). 

  • Skilled in data analysis, statistics, and data visualization, especially with large datasets. 

  • U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or similar technical discipline with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and machine learning. A record of a longer period of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree. 

  • Knowledge of key approaches for incorporating physics into AI/ML models using neural operators, physics-informed neural networks, hybrid modeling, regularization techniques, or other physics-informed approaches. 

  • Experience with modeling and simulation of electrical power systems. 

  • Experience using the MATLAB/Simulink modeling and simulation environment. 

  • Technical knowledge of optimization algorithms beyond AI/ML approaches (such as LP method or meta-heuristic search algorithms).   

  • Experience with coding against GPUs (using libraries such as CUDA) or other high-performance, specialized hardware for machine learning applications. 

  • Familiarity with machine control systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems.  

  • Knowledge and experience in building generative adversarial networks (GAN).
